Sadly, during the afternoon on Monday, New York City witnessed the most deadly terrorist attack in its midst since the September 11, 2001 attack that claimed the lives of thousands of Americans. In both cases, the terrorists were motivated by radical Islamic ideology, which demonizes the West and democracy. To carry out his attack against civilians, the terrorist used his vehicle as the weapon, and murdered 8 people when he rammed it into unsuspecting pedestrians on a bike path, before driving into oncoming traffic and ramming a a school bus filled with children and adults.
Law enforcement sources identified the suspect to CBS News as, a 29-year-old truck driver who has lived in Tampa, Florida, and New Jersey. He came to the U.S. in 2010 from Uzbekistan.
A federal law enforcement source said aand that it made reference to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ( ).
“This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said about the attack. He called it “a very painful day in our city.”
Unfortunately, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the United States, the terrorist attack in Spain on August 17 and the tens of thousands of rockets fired into Israel (yes, tens of thousands) all share one thing in common: radical Islam. We must be aware of the threat of this extremist ideology and stand together to fight against it, no matter where it strikes and no matter from who it originates.
To all of our friends in the United States that fight against terror and stand with Israel in our struggles, we too stand with you. The Lev Haolam family extends our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the innocent American civilians that were killed in yesterday’s attack.
