United States Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Nikki Haley announced on Sunday a $285 million cut to the U.N. budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. The decision to slash funding for the notoriously anti-Israel international organization comes just a few days after a majority of votes effectively condemned US President Donald Trump’s historic announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his plans to move the US embassy there, US News & World Report wrote.
Although it was not clear where the cut would come from, it is widely assumed that the US will cut back on its contributions for the United Nations, as the US is one of the largest contributors of the organization. (The U.N. has an overall $5.4-billion biennial budget, of which the U.S. funds about 22 percent, according to Newsweek.)
An official United States announcement included the following statement: “Today, the United Nations agreed on a budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Among a host of other successes, the United States negotiated a reduction of over $285 million off of the 2016-2017 final budget. In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key U.S. priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system.”
“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known. We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked. This historic reduction in spending – in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable UN – is a big step in the right direction. While we are pleased with the results of this year’s budget negotiations, you can be sure we’ll continue to look at ways to increase the UN’s efficiency while protecting our interests,” said Ambassador Haley.
US President Donald Trump and Ambassador Haley have been fierce proponents for Israel – in addition to the United States which she represents – and have called out the United Nations for its unfair bias and obsession with Israel. In October, the United States announced that it plans to leave the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, also known as UNESCO, citing anti-Israel bias.
