A senior member of Hamas – the Gaza-based Islamist terrorist organization whose sole purpose is to fight against the Jewish State – has died of his own self-inflicted wounds, a Hamas spokesman said Tuesday. The death of Imad al-Alami was a result of a self-inflicted gun shot wound. The terrorist leader shot himself in the head ‘accidentally’, according to a Hamas spokesperson – yes, you read that right.

On January 9th, Fawzy Barhoum, a spokesman for Hamas, said that Imad al-Alami, was critically wounded when his personal firearm accidentally discharged. Al-Alami, 61, was “inspecting his personal weapon in his home and is in critical condition,” Barhoum said at the time. The Hamas leader was then rushed to a Gaza City hospital.

Imad al-Alami, also known as Abu Hamam, was one of the founders of Hamas and served as a former member of Hamas’s political bureau. Al-Alami also had oversight responsibility for the group’s military wing in Gaza and Judea and Samaria, according to a report by the US government. For several years, Al-Alami reportedly built a close relationship with Iran. As a result of his efforts, Al- Alami became Hamas’s main envoy to Iran, the terrorist organization’s main military and financial backer, according to The Times of Israel. In more recent years,

Imad al-Alami operated as a Hamas leader primarily out of Damascus, Syria up until 2012, a year after the start of the civil war in Syria. At that time, al-Alami moved to Gaza, where he continued to be influential in the politics of Hamas. Soon after moving to Gaza, al-Alami was elected to be deputy leader in Gaza, a position he held until last year.

In recent years, the Hamas leader was said to be suffering from a variety of health problems. Although unconfirmed, some theorize that he may have committed suicide. In the event that he did in fact try to commit suicide, his attempted and failed suicide attempt surely would not be a source of pride or something that Hamas would want to go public with. We may never know the exact motivation of his suicide, accidental or not, but in the end Imad al-Alami did kill himself.
