Yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that due to intelligence provided by Israel, a plot by the Islamic State group to blow up a plane from Sydney was foiled. According to news reports, the plot included the smuggling of an explosive device inside a meat mincer, by the 2 brothers Khaled Khayat, 49, and Mahmoud Khayat, 32. Last July, Australian police charged the two brothers for their plot to blow up an Etihad Airways flight traveling from Sydney to Abu Dhabi, according to BBC News.
“The Israeli intelligence services thwarted the downing of an Australian plane, an unimaginable slaughter,” Netanyahu said yesterday. “This would have caused a major disruption in global air transport and this is only one of the dozens of terrorist attacks we have foiled around the world.”

Australian Federal Police (AFP) Deputy Commissioner Michael Phelan said this was “one of the most sophisticated plots that has ever been attempted on Australian soil”. Australian police said the plot had been orchestrated by “a senior member of the Islamic State” based overseas. The Israeli army said one of the elite intelligence unit, called 8200, provided the information in 2017, which led to the arrest of the ISIS terrorists. It was prevented when foreign intelligence agencies intercepted communications from the Syrian jihadist, police said. The renowned 8200 unit uses sophisticated information-gathering technology to prevent terrorist attacks and to provide valuable information to Israeli security personnel.
