A 27-year-old Arab Terrorist from the Saraya al-Quds cell, a branch of Islamic Jihad, was killed in an accidental explosion in the northern Gaza Strip, said Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Health Ministry said on Saturday. Islamic Jihad said the terrorist, who was identified as Ibrahim Frahat, died “while preparing for battle,” making no mention of an “accidental explosion.” During the explosion, two other Arabs from Gaza were injured.
Major General Yoav Mordechai, the head of the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), said that Frahat died while “manufacturing weapons and ammunition for Islamic Jihad in a house in the Sheikh Zayed neighborhood in Beit Lahiya.”
“It is no surprise that a person who plays with fire ultimately harms himself,” Mordechai wrote in a Facebook post.
In January, 22-year-old Hamas activist Mohammad Fathi Janid was also killed in what the terror group referred to as an “accidental explosion” in the northern Gaza Strip, the Jerusalem Post reported. Last year, 22 members of Hamas’s armed wing were killed while “preparing equipment,” the majority in a string of tunnel collapses, Hamas said.
The latest high-profile “accidental suicide” – from a sworn enemy of Israel – was that of Imad al-Alami, also known as Abu Hamam, who “accidentally shot himself” in January. Al-Alami was one of the founders of Hamas and served as a former member of Hamas’s political bureau. Although unconfirmed, some theorize that he may have committed suicide and due to the embarrassment which would have been caused by the news of such an act by a founding member, the terrorist organization framed it as “an accidental suicide”.
